Kendel Star

* Stakes performed sprinter-miler in Melbourne

* By Champion sire of sires Kenmare

* Reliable source of fast, tough horses in Western Australia

Kendel Star arrived in the second southern crop of Kenmare who was Australia’s first-ever shuttle stallion at Arrowfield Stud.

Kenmare represented the Grey Sovereign line through Zeddaan and Kalamoun. A member of Kalamoun’s first crop, Kenmare emulated his sire by winning the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois for owner Baron Guy de Rothschild and trainer Francois Mathet.

Kenmare was Champion sire twice in France and emerged as a champion sire of sires in Europe and Australia. His first southern crop included the very smart juvenile Kenfair (G2 Silver Slipper Stakes) and he followed up with Group 1 sprinters Keltrice (VRC Lightning Stakes) and Kenvain (VATC Oakleigh Plate). All three colts went on to enjoy successful stud careers.

Kenmare’s second Australian crop also included Kendel Star. Like Kenfair, Keltrice and Kenvain, Kendel Star came from a very good mare. This was understandable as Kenmare was one of the most exciting stallions in Australia at the time.

Kendel Star’s dam Excited Regent was a USA import by the Northern Dancer stallion Vice Regent from a half-sister to the French-trained stakes winners Lyphard and Nobiliary. She was also a full-sister to Barb’s Bold who eventually made her mark as the grand-dam of Seeking The Pearl (G1 winner in Japan & France) and Magical Miss (G1 VATC Thousand Guineas & VRC Oaks).

Kendel Star was the best of her 6 winners and she also foaled the dam of Howmuchdoyouloveme (Written Tycoon) who won the G2 Caulfield Sprint and G3 Healy Stakes last season.

Kendel Star proved a worthy representative of the Grey Sovereign line – he was fast, very tough and grey. All told, he proved a redoubtable campaigner in Melbourne for several seasons, winning 9 races between 1000m and 1700m and recording several stakes placings including the G2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley.

Kendel Star has never received large books and has never covered notable mares. However, he has established himself as a reliable source of fast, tough horses in Western Australia where the best of his stock have been the stakes-winning sprinters Kens Double, Even Astar, Speccio and Mabel Grace.

Grey Sovereign has been very successful in Western Australia – Kendel Star is the last active horse from the sireline in the west following the likes of Metal Storm (Mungrup Stud), Verglas (Alwyn Park), Tribu (Taunton Vale) and Kenvain (Mungrup Stud).

In the 1980s and 1990s, the Grey Sovereign line received a fillip in WA with the arrival of Caro stallion Cheraw. He stood at Sir Ernest Lee-Steere’s Limestone Park Stud and sired the WATC Derby winners Heroicity, Belele and The Bukhra.

The Grey Sovereign line is no longer in vogue – but, as Kendel Star is still proving, one doesn’t need to be fashionable to sire nice horses.
